Available at newsstands today Handgun found on school trespasser Outside activities cancelled By RITCHIE E. STARNES Editor A man was charged with possession of a gun on the campus of John A. Holmes High School Tuesday - the same day concerns about a fight prompted school of ficials to cancel outside ac tivities. Deputies confronted three men who were walking on campus near Historic Hicks Field at the time of school dismissal, said Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin. They were then ordered off the property But after school officials in formed the officers that two of the men had already been asked to leave, the deputies opted to cite the two men who had walked away as far as Oakum and Freemason streets. As the men were be ing cited for trespassing, it was discovered that one of the men wSs armed with a loaded .22-caliber handgun. “He wasn’t waving the gun or anything like that. It was found stuffed in his waistband during a pat down,” Goodwin said. ' Denzel DeQuan Williams, 17, of 72 Chowan Court in Edenton was charged with possession of a gun on edu cational property and sec ond-degree trespassing, re ports show. Adrian Kentral Rome, 19, of 113-C Ryan’s Grove Road, Edenton was also charged with trespass mg. Police earlier alerted school officials after they responded to a morning fight, on Oakum Street, near the Holmes’ campus. Town Manager Anne-Marie | Knighton said Monday she had m - m —r— --—4-— been notified by the N.C. Depart ment of Cultural Resources that funds could be available as early as the end of this week to make the move possible. Knighton said that she was told by Mark Cooney, capital projects director for NCDCR, that the state would provide $271,000 in contingency funds for the move. “I am so excited,” Knighton said. “It will be good to have it (lighthouse) in its permanent location.” Cooney was away from his office and unavailable for com ment. Currently, the lighthouse is sitting atop pilings at the wa terfront and Knighton said she worries every time hurricane season comes around about what could happen. With the exterior of the lighthouse restored, and funds secured to facilitate the reloca tion, the only step that remains will be to restore the interior of the building. Funds are being sought to make that possible. Plans include moving the lighthouse before the interior renovation. Relocation will be handled by the A.R. Chesson Company of Williamston, contractor for the lighthouse restoration project. Small said the couple had discussed let ting their home be taken by their banker. "We talked to them and said, ‘Let us try for a short sale’,” Small said. “There was not enough money there with the cur rent market at that time for them to break even or make money.” Small said the couple was happy to sell their house at a financial loss rather than face bank ruptcy or foreclosure pro ceedings. “And that was the right choice for them,’’ Small said. Small cannot disclose the couple’s identity for confidentiality reasons. Small and others in real estate, finance and economic development in the Albemarle continue to face tough times since the 2008 burst of the nation wide housing bubble and the financial collapse on Wall Street.
